Project Wayfinder is building scalable, certifiable autonomy systems to power self-piloted aircraft applications throughout Airbus, from small urban air vehicles (aka air taxis) to large commercial airplanes. Our team of experts is driving the maturation of machine learning and other core technologies for autonomous flight; we are creating a reference architecture that includes hardware, software, and a data-driven development process to allow aircraft to perceive and react to their environment. The Opportunity 

As an Integration & Flight Test Engineer, you will report to the Director of Flight Test and Operations at Wayfinder. In this role, you will work with other Ground and Flight Test Engineers to integrate and test our software and hardware systems on benchtop, surrogate vehicles, and full-scale vehicle platforms. You will organize resources required to conduct thorough testing of our systems while working with engineers across the team to design those tests. You will also coordinate with various stakeholders to design test missions and campaigns to meet multiple customer’s testable requirements. Your efforts will bridge the gap between ground testing and flight testing to conduct an efficient, safe, and effective flight test program. In that vein, you will work directly with technical leads to meet higher programmatic test objectives on time and within budget. This requires collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to  write and execute achievable test plans utilizing our various test hardware and software ground facilities and aircraft. Specifically, you will focus on preparing test plans, executing them on our flying test bed while documenting and reporting test metrics daily and periodically. Since our work encompasses many engineering disciplines, you should expect to work closely with our subject matter experts across teams and expand your knowledge as an engineering generalist. You should be proactive, outspoken and willing to drive our testing activities with an emphasis on safety while maintaining urgency and a bias toward action.


  • Plan, organize and execute flight test operations on surrogate and full-scale vehicles
  • Work with technical leads and department heads to design, fabricate and manage flight test hardware, software and support equipment
  • Team with Ground and Flight Test Engineers who build and manage our HIL/SILs and integrated aircraft surrogates to ensure flight test objectives are first tested  under controlled ground test conditions 
  • Support cross functional and cross discipline teams to execute successful flight operations by setting test priorities and communicating them effectively
  • Create innovative and efficient processes and procedures for testing our systems that keep us on schedule while maintaining quality and safety at all times
  • Manage flight test article hardware and software configurations  
  • Evaluate system performance, provide detailed observations during testing and deliver actionable system performance feedback during flight and ground test events
  • Manage and curate flight and flight test data and video
  • Deliver quick look reports immediately following test events and detailed written reports following major test milestones to include final reports
  • Develop flight and ground test data analysis tools capable of supporting an agile and fast-paced test campaign, and employ them to assist in confirming performance, identifying and diagnosing issues, and collaborating on solutions
  • Perform various manual tasks including installing and replacing test equipment and test system hardware, calibrating test hardware, refueling aircraft, connecting ground power to the aircraft and conducting ground aircraft system checkouts
  • Continually evaluate  ground and flight test procedures and operations and enact changes to improve data quality, efficacy, safety and efficiency
  • Establish safe operating procedures and enforce them in our laboratory and off-site testing locations
  • Support and report on issues relating to our Safety Management System


  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, aerospace, or electrical engineering, or a related discipline
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in engineering including integrating sensors and ancillary support equipment in aerospace vehicles
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, execute and document a test program including exceptional organizational and communication skills for coordinating with internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated knowledge of at least one of the following topics: electrical prototyping of sense and compute systems, integrating optical sensors or software testing of complex machine learning systems
  • Basic knowledge of systems engineering processes, tools and experience in writing and executing testable objectives 
  • Knowledge of relevant aviation regulations and logistics including general aviation aircraft alterations and maintenance, radio communication procedures, and flight planning
  • Experience with Safety Management Systems (SMS) either in a supervisory or participant role
  • Able to conduct flight test engineer duties in general aviation aircraft

Strongly preferred qualifications

  • MS or PhD with significant experience with experimental air vehicle project(s)
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills conducting flight test missions
  • Real-world experience testing aircraft systems and subsystems
  • Familiarity with or experience in Machine Learning processes and applications
  • Experience with Python or other interpreted programming languages
  • Familiarity with optical systems to include calibrating and quantifying sensor and transparency performance to ensure desired optical clarity
  • Experience with Agile methods, and related tools, e.g. JIRA, Bitbucket
  • Database and configuration management experienced
  • An interest in videography and/or photography either professionally or as a hobby
  • Fixed-wing pilot or actively pursuing a license
